The plastics industry is one of the largest in the world. It is estimated that over 13 billion pounds of plastic are produced every year in the United States alone.<\/p>\n

Plastic is the most widely used material in the world, and is essential in consumer goods, furniture, medicine and construction.<\/p>\n

The annual market value of the European plastics industry has reached 300 billion euros. 80% of all consumer goods contain plastic.<\/p>\n

Most plastics<\/a> are generally classified as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).<\/p>\n

Polyethylenes are produced in a variety of forms. Low-density polyethylene is most often injection-molded to form large parts, such as garbage cans, drum bodies and gutters; however, it can also be extruded into film used for industrial packaging and bags.<\/p>\n

High-density polyethylene is formed by blending up to 15% of other materials to obtain particular characteristics or properties. It is used to produce clear plastic plates, cups and utensils that are both strong and robust, but in smaller quantities than LDPE.<\/p>\n
