Offset printing is an indirect printing technique in which ink is transferred from an engraved metal plate to a rubber blanket, then from the blanket to the printing substrate (usually paper). It’s a method recognized for its high image quality and efficiency for medium and large production runs.
Offset printing is particularly suited to a wide range of papers (coated, uncoated, offset, special…), but can also be used on certain cardboard and other flat substrates. The texture and thickness of the substrate can influence the result.
Offset printing offers exceptional image quality, with rich colors and precise detail. It is economical for medium and large quantities, allows the use of Pantone inks (direct colors), and offers great flexibility in terms of finishes and paper types.
As with digital printing, we prefer high-resolution PDF files (300 DPI minimum) with bleeds (usually 3 mm on each side) and trim lines. Fonts must be embedded or vectorized.
Displays use the RGB colorimetric mode, while offset printing uses the CMYK mode. These two color systems have different ranges, which can lead to slight variations. A calibrated color proof can help visualize the printed result.
A color proof is a simulation of the final print run. It’s used to check colorimetry, element placement and quality before large-scale printing. It is highly recommended for large offset projects to avoid costly errors.
