Oil & Gas industry

The petroleum sector, also known as the oil & gas or energy sector, refers to the industry involved in exploring for and extracting oil and gas from the ground.

In its most basic form, the oil industry is divided into upstream, midstream and downstream activities.

Upstream includes exploration, extraction and production;

the intermediary takes care of transporting and storing the oil;

and downstream is the refining, marketing and sale of petroleum products.

These three parts interact with each other in interesting ways.

Today, the oil industry is one of the most important and influential aspects of the global economy, with high revenues and profits for large multinational companies.

As oil is a non-renewable natural resource, the industry is faced with inevitable production depletion.

Statistics from BP Review of World Energy 2007 listed reserve-to-production ratios for proven resources worldwide. The study placed the foreseeable life of proven reserves in the Middle East at 79.5 years; in Latin America at 41.2 years and in North America at just 12 years. source
