Libyan market

Libya’s economy depends mainly on oil revenues, which make up almost all exports. Industry and agriculture are limited.

Oil revenues coupled with a small population gave Libya the highest GDP per capita on the African continent. From 2000 onwards, Brent crude oil prices soared, driving Libyan growth upwards (over the period 2003-2008, GDP multiplied by 3).

In 2009, with the fall in oil prices linked to the worldwide recession, Libya’s GDP dropped from 87 billion to 63 billion US$. It recovered slightly the following year, but the Arab Spring and the two successive civil wars in 2011 totally disrupted the country’s economy.

That same year, GDP fell to US$ 34 billion. Today, the country is still a long way from recovering its pre-crisis economy, with GDP in 2017 standing at US$51 billion. Source
