Niger Economy

The structure of Nigeria’s economy is comparable to that of many African countries.

Africa’s most populous country, it is the continent’s leading oil producer.

Its gross domestic product (GDP) per capita is in line with the African average, but well below pre-independence levels. Around two-thirds of the population live below the absolute poverty line ($1 a day), compared with 43% in 1985.

Thanks to its human potential and wealth of natural resources, Nigeria ranks as Africa’s 1st economic power with a GDP of $481.07 billion (2016) , ahead of South Africa ($312.8 billion in 2016).

Its GDP (in purchasing power parity) was second only to Egypt’s in Africa in 2018.

Most economic activity takes place in the coastal zone in the south of the country, particularly around Lagos. Although it employs the bulk of the working population, agriculture has been expanding in recent years (33% of GDP in 2009). Source
