History of poster advertising
The advertising poster is one of the oldest forms of publicity. In the 19th century, it was used to promote plays and political causes. It has also played a crucial role in the art world, helping up-and-coming artists to make a name for themselves. Posters are an integral part of design history, and many famous designers began their careers designing posters. The main characteristic of posters is that they are intended to be seen and read from a distance, often on walls or kiosks. This distinguishes them from other types of printed material, such as brochures, which are generally intended to be held within easy reach. Posters are often considered to have little artistic merit or value, but this is not always the case. Just think of movie posters or album covers by popular artists, which have been used for decades as powerful forms of advertising.
In the early 20th century, thanks to advances in printing technology, posters became more affordable and more commonplace. They were used everywhere: on walls, in store windows, even on the sides of buildings. Today, posters can still be found just about everywhere, but they’ve simply taken on different forms over time.
A good example of this evolution is today’s movie posters, compared with those of previous decades.
