A poster is essentially a visual medium that advertises or promotes a particular event, organization, idea or product. It can be printed on paper, vinyl or fabric, and can also be used to convey information about the event, organization or product.
Posters can be designed in a number of ways, including illustration, photography, typography and computer graphics. The most common form of poster is the one placed on the street to announce events.
Posters first appeared in the 1800s in Paris, France, to advertise plays and other entertainment events.
They were usually pasted on walls or displayed like flyers in public places such as street corners. Posters became more popular when newspapers began using them to advertise their services. By the end of the 19th century, posters were gaining in popularity throughout Europe, as they were cheap and easy to produce and distribute. In fact, the first poster ever produced was for a play staged at the Palais Royal in Paris by Mlle Mars and sponsored by Ricard wine.
Other posters were produced for military recruitment during the First World War, where efforts were made to arouse the patriotism of young men who would later take part in the war effort against Germany. Posters were also produced for films during this period.
